A sequel to the 2006 indie horror film "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" is officially in development, with director Scott Glosserman and original stars Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, and Robert Englund returning. The film, titled "Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon," will follow the character's further exploits as a serial killer, with production underway through Paper Street Pictures.
The original "Behind the Mask" debuted in 2006 as a slasher mockumentary that gained cult status over two decades through fan sharing and word-of-mouth promotion. Writer David J. Stieve is also returning for the sequel alongside Glosserman. The production is being supplemented by a Kickstarter campaign to expand the film's scope, though Glosserman stated the movie will be made regardless of crowdfunding results.
Glosserman framed the project as driven by audience demand. "For 20 years, people have asked if Leslie would ever come back. The truth is, he never really left," Glosserman said in a statement. "Fans kept this movie alive by sharing it, quoting it, introducing it to their friends, and treating it like something worth holding onto. This sequel is happening because of them."
Paper Street Pictures, led by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns, is producing the sequel. Adam F. Goldberg, known for his work on "The Goldbergs" and "Shelby Oaks," is joining as an executive producer. Glosserman credited Paper Street's sustained belief in the project as instrumental to its greenlight.
The director indicated that additional crowdfunding could enable larger production values. "We're making the movie either way," Glosserman said. "But the more the audience gets involved, the bigger we can make it. Bigger set pieces. More cameos. More surprises. This has always been a fan-driven film, and it still is."
Context
The original "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" was released in 2006 to limited theatrical distribution but found its primary audience through home video and streaming platforms over the following two decades. The film's mockumentary format—presenting a serial killer's perspective through documentary-style interviews and footage—distinguished it from conventional slasher films of that era. Its survival in cultural memory despite minimal mainstream recognition reflects a broader pattern in horror cinema where niche films gain sustained popularity through fan communities and social media sharing.
Sequels to cult horror films have become increasingly common in recent years, with properties like "Evil Dead," "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and "Friday the 13th" all receiving reboots or continuations after extended gaps. However, reuniting the original creative team and cast 20 years after the initial release remains relatively uncommon in the horror genre.
What's Next
The Kickstarter campaign's performance will likely determine the production budget and scale of the sequel, with Glosserman explicitly linking additional funds to expanded set pieces and guest appearances. The film's development timeline remains unspecified, though production has begun with Paper Street Pictures overseeing the project. The sequel's release will test whether the original film's cult following has remained active enough to support a theatrical or streaming release, and whether new audiences unfamiliar with the 2006 film will engage with the property.
