Broadway’s The Book of Mormon Shuttered Through Mid-May After Eugene O’Neill Theatre Fire

Deadline

Producers of The Book of Mormon have canceled all performances of the long-running Broadway musical through Sunday, May 17, 2026, following a fire that broke out Monday morning inside the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.

Producers of The Book of Mormon have canceled all performances of the long-running Broadway musical through Sunday, May 17, 2026, following a fire that broke out Monday morning inside the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.

The Details

The fire occurred on the morning of Monday, May 4, 2026, in the electrical room located between the fourth and fifth floors of the theater building. The New York City Fire Department upgraded the incident to a three-alarm fire, dispatching 63 units and approximately 192 firefighters and emergency medical services workers to the scene.

In a joint statement issued on May 6, ATG Entertainment and the producers of The Book of Mormon confirmed the fire and thanked emergency responders. "On the morning of Monday, May 4, a fire was reported at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre," the statement read. "FDNY was immediately contacted, were on site within minutes, and quickly extinguished the fire. ATG Entertainment and The Book of Mormon extend their deepest thanks to the firefighters and emergency responders for their bravery and speedy response."

An ATG spokesperson, speaking to Playbill on the day of the incident, said, "The NYFD is at the site of the fire now and are handling matters at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. Everyone has been safely removed from the theatre."

The fire was limited to the follow-spot booth area of the theater. The fourth-floor electrical room, which houses lighting equipment and chandelier fixtures, sustained significant damage.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries during the response. The theater was safely evacuated, and no additional injuries were reported. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Context

The Book of Mormon has been running at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre for over 15 years since its Broadway premiere in 2011. It has won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 2011, and is regarded as one of Broadway’s longest-running and most commercially successful musicals.

The theater itself was established in 1925 under its original name, the Forrest Theatre, and has been operated by Jujamcyn Theaters, now part of ATG Entertainment, since 1982.

The current cast includes Kevin Clay as Elder Price, Diego Enrico as Elder Cunningham, and Sydney Quildon as Nabulungi.

What's Next

Producers and ATG Entertainment have stated that performances are anticipated to resume at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in the coming weeks, with a further update expected next week.

Ticket holders affected by the cancellations will be notified through their point of purchase for refunds or the option to reschedule. At this time, no performances have been confirmed beyond the May 17 cancellation window.
