With Kentucky's Republican Senate primary scheduled for May 19 and the contest to replace retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell entering its final two weeks, former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron is pitching himself as the candidate who faces voters directly while criticizing endorsed rival Rep. Andy Barr for skipping debate stages, NBC News and the Lexington Herald-Leader report.
The Details
The Kentucky Republican Senate primary was reshaped on May 1 when President Donald Trump endorsed U.S. Rep. Andy Barr after urging businessman Nate Morris to step aside for a potential ambassadorship, according to NBC News.
The White House intervention dramatically narrowed the Republican field for the open seat created by McConnell's decision not to seek another term after more than four decades in office, CNN reported.
Morris confirmed to NBC News that he would leave the race after Trump asked him to accept an administration role. "When President Trump asks you to serve your nation, you answer the call," Morris said.
Trump's endorsement of Barr came in a Truth Social post. "I know Andy well, and he is always a Vote we can count on because he knows what it takes to GET THINGS DONE and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Trump wrote, according to NBC News.
The endorsement left Barr and Cameron as the main remaining Republican contenders for the seat, CNN reported.
Cameron responded to Trump's intervention by campaigning in the race's final stretch. Speaking at a Louisville press conference, he said the contest is now effectively a two-man race in which voters face a choice between a candidate who shows up and one who avoids answering for his record, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.
He criticized Barr for skipping a Kentucky Educational Television debate and for backing out of Fox 56's planned May 5 debate after Barr and Morris withdrew from that event, the report said.
"Andy Barr had an opportunity to stand on a debate stage with me to answer questions, to contrast our views and ultimately to face the voters of this commonwealth," Cameron said, according to the Herald-Leader.
Rather than trying to match Barr's endorsement politics, Cameron emphasized support from everyday Kentuckians, including small-business owners, pharmacists and farmers, the Herald-Leader reported.
Context
The open Senate seat exists because McConnell decided not to seek another term after more than four decades in office, CNN reported. McConnell's retirement marked the end of an era in Kentucky and national Republican politics, creating a closely watched primary to succeed him.
The White House has taken an unusually active role in Kentucky Republican politics this cycle. Trump also visited Kentucky in March to campaign against Rep. Thomas Massie, CNN reported.
The GOP nominee will be strongly favored in the general election for the seat McConnell is vacating, NBC News reported.
