Christopher Nolan has responded directly to online criticism of his upcoming epic 'The Odyssey,' defending both the design of Agamemnon's black armor and his decision to cast rapper Travis Scott as a bard. In a Time interview published May 12, the director cited historical precedent for the armor and explained that Scott's casting was a deliberate nod to the story's roots in oral poetry.

The Details

Nolan addressed the backlash in an interview with Time, portions of which were reported by The Wrap. Critics online had compared the black armor worn by Benny Safdie's Agamemnon to Batman's suit after trailer footage circulated. Nolan rejected that framing, pointing to Mycenaean-era artifacts as a basis for the design.

"There are Mycenaean daggers that are blackened bronze," Nolan said, according to the Time interview. "The theory is they probably could have blackened bronze in those days. You take bronze, you add more gold and silver to it and then use sulfur." He added that costume designer Ellen Mirojnick intended the material choices to communicate the king's elevated status relative to other soldiers.

The Wrap reported that Nolan described the costume as using "expensive-looking materials" to signal Agamemnon's rank.

Nolan also explained his casting of Travis Scott, who appears in the film as a bard. "I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap," Nolan said in the Time interview.

The director drew a parallel between the current criticism and the scientific pushback he received for "Interstellar." "We had a lot of scientists complain about 'Interstellar,'" Nolan said. "But you just don't want people to think that you took it on frivolously." He indicated that the historical reconstruction in "The Odyssey" was approached with the same rigor as the speculative scientific worldbuilding in his 2014 space epic.

Context

Online criticism of "The Odyssey" intensified after trailer footage revealed Benny Safdie in the role of Agamemnon wearing black armor and confirmed Travis Scott's presence in the cast. The visual choices sparked immediate comparison to superhero aesthetics on social media. Nolan's interview with Time was part of a broader promotional push for the film, which has also included discussion of its runtime and overall scale.

What's Next

'The Odyssey' is scheduled to open in theaters on July 17, according to The Wrap's reporting on Nolan's interview circuit.
