Craig Mazin Says His Long-Gestating 'The Sheep Detectives' Is the Film Where He Finally 'Figured It Out'

Mazin noted that Doran spent years securing the rights, saying, 'It took her nine to unwind the rights.' He described the project as especially personal to him and stated, 'I feel like this is the one where I finally figured it out.'

The project first moved into production under the title 'Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie.' Variety reported in June 2024 that principal photography had begun and that the film was initially set for a Feb. 20, 2026 theatrical release from Amazon MGM Studios. In October 2025, Deadline reported that the title had been shortened to 'The Sheep Detectives' and that its release date had shifted to May 8, 2026. Mazin also used the interview to push back against the idea that comedy is less demanding than prestige drama. 'It's so much harder to write Scary Movie 3 than it is to write Chernobyl,' he told The Hollywood Reporter.
