Burlington Parks and Recreation addressed the incident in a statement published on Facebook and quoted by The Hawk Eye. The department said: "Crapo Park was vandalized, and our crews are spending the entire day fixing damage that never should have happened."

The Hawk Eye, citing the department's Facebook post, reported that pieces of a broken vehicle taillight were found at the scene.

The same Facebook post quoted by The Hawk Eye stated: "This kind of damage isn't free. It costs time and taxpayer dollars that should be going toward improving our parks, not repairing them."

WQAD independently reported the vandalism, citing photos posted by Burlington Parks and Recreation and comments from Gourley. WQAD reported that Gourley discovered the damage early Monday morning.

Parks Superintendent Ryan Gourley spoke to WQAD about the financial impact of repairing the damage. He said: "It's tough for us to pinch every dollar, and then when we have things like this. This just takes away from other things that could be so much better for everybody."

According to WQAD, a police report was filed following the discovery of the damage, and the investigation is ongoing.
