Five Brazilian Films Debut at Cannes Market Showcase Following Oscar Success

Variety

Five Brazilian films in post-production will premiere excerpts at the Marché du Film during this year's Cannes Festival as part of the Festival do Rio Goes to Cannes showcase.

Five Brazilian films in post-production will premiere excerpts at the Marché du Film during this year's Cannes Festival as part of the Festival do Rio Goes to Cannes showcase. The selection follows Brazil's recent international success with "I'm Still Here" and "The Secret Agent," and features work from emerging directors including Jô Serfaty, Thais Fujinaga, and filmmaking duo Maju de Paiva and Bernardo Florim.

All five films will be presented at the Marché du Film showcase, with excerpts available for buyers and industry professionals. The lineup spans multiple genres and themes: Serfaty's fiction debut "Beyond the Edge" is set in the coastal village of Atafona north of Rio, where rising sea levels are consuming inhabited land. De Paiva and Florim's "Days of Fire," following their 2024 Festival do Rio award-winning debut "Avenida Beira-Mar," explores genre filmmaking and fantastic realism. Fujinaga's "Talented" centers on a mother-daughter relationship and the expectations family members project onto each other.

The showcase also includes a biographical film about Carolina Maria de Jesus, a favela waste picker who became an international bestselling author in the 1950s and 1960s, and Fabio Mendonça's "The Character," which examines immigration through a lens of resistance. Ilda Santiago, executive director of the Festival do Rio, told Variety the selection demonstrates "the vigorous time in Brazilian cinema and the fact that we are bound to be diverse."

Santiago said the curatorial approach reflects growing confidence in how Brazilian cinema is perceived globally. "We are more adventurous. And that comes with confidence in how Brazilian cinema is perceived globally," she stated. She acknowledged that Brazilian cinema faces challenges reconnecting with domestic audiences but described the selection as "a small taste of what's in store."

The 2026 showcase introduces two new awards: the OCS+ Award of €15,000 ($17.6 million) for French distributors acquiring a Goes to Cannes project, and the AH Media Production Award of €10,000 ($11,700) in cash. These join the existing Sideral Cinema Award, which guarantees a minimum of €10,000 to one selected project.

Context

The Festival do Rio Goes to Cannes is part of a broader series organized by the Cannes Festival's Marché du Film, featuring works in progress from festivals and markets worldwide. Brazilian cinema has experienced a surge in international recognition: "I'm Still Here," directed by Walter Salles, competed at the 2024 Venice Film Festival and earned a Golden Globe nomination, while "The Secret Agent" also achieved significant international distribution. The showcase reflects a strategic effort to maintain momentum following these successes and position emerging Brazilian filmmakers for global distribution deals.

The Festival do Rio itself, formally known as the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, has historically served as a launching pad for Brazilian talent. The 2024 edition saw De Paiva and Florim's "Avenida Beira-Mar" win the festival's top Brazilian film award, establishing the duo as significant voices in contemporary Brazilian cinema.

What's Next

The excerpts will be screened during the Marché du Film at Cannes, where distributors and producers typically make acquisition and co-production decisions. Industry buyers will evaluate the five projects for theatrical and streaming distribution rights. Santiago noted that while the selection represents emerging talent, the broader challenge for Brazilian cinema remains rebuilding domestic box office performance after years of strong international performance, suggesting future showcases may need to balance global appeal with local market recovery.
