A Frontier Airlines jet bound for Los Angeles struck and killed a pedestrian who had breached the perimeter fence at Denver International Airport during takeoff on the night of May 8, 2026, forcing the crew to abort the departure and evacuate the aircraft amid reports of smoke in the cabin. Twelve people sustained minor injuries during the evacuation and five were taken to local hospitals, according to Reuters. Denver International Airport said it would conduct an incident analysis and review its perimeter security program following the breach, while the National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering information about the evacuation.

The Details

Frontier Flight 4345 was accelerating on its takeoff roll at approximately 11:19 p.m. Mountain Time on May 8 when the crew reported striking a person on the active runway, AP News reported. Denver International Airport said the pedestrian had jumped the airport's perimeter fence and was hit about two minutes later while crossing the runway, according to Reuters.

Air traffic control audio captured the pilot transmitting, "We're stopping on the runway. We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire," CNN reported. Frontier Airlines said smoke was reported in the cabin and the pilots aborted the takeoff after the collision.

Twelve people reported minor injuries during the evacuation, and five of them were transported to local hospitals, Reuters reported. The runway where the collision occurred was reopened at approximately 10:55 a.m. local time on May 9 after the scene was cleared, according to Reuters.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering information about the evacuation following the fatal runway strike, AP News reported. Reuters reported the investigation remains open under the jurisdiction of Denver, Colorado, and U.S. federal aviation authorities.

Accounts of how many people were aboard the flight varied across early reporting. Reuters reported 224 passengers and seven crew members on the flight, while AP News cited pilot-air traffic control audio referencing 231 souls on board. The discrepancy likely reflects a difference between the airline's passenger manifest and the pilot's onboard count, and remained unresolved at the time of reporting.

Context

Denver International Airport spans 53 square miles and is enclosed by 36 miles of perimeter fence, complicating perimeter security monitoring, CNN reported. Fatal pedestrian-aircraft collisions are extremely rare, occurring less than once per year on average, according to an aviation safety expert cited by CNN.

What's Next

Denver International Airport said it would conduct a full incident analysis and review its perimeter security program after the breach, CNN reported on May 11. Authorities had not publicly identified the pedestrian at the time of reporting, and the exact cause of the reported cabin smoke and engine fire had not been fully established in public reporting.
