According to a Google blog post, the box can expand on demand and process multiple input types — not just typed keywords, but images, files, videos, and entire Chrome browser tabs. Google described it as the most significant overhaul of the Search box since the product’s inception.
“We’re also introducing a new, intelligent AI-powered Search box, marking its biggest upgrade in over 25 years,” Google wrote in the announcement.
Google said the redesigned search box is beginning to roll out in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available. AI Mode is the company’s conversational search layer, which supports follow-up questions and agentic features embedded inside the traditional Search experience. Google is positioning AI Mode as the bridge between a standard search engine and conversational AI, according to its blog post.
The announcement came during Google’s I/O 2026 developer conference, where the company tied the search-box redesign to a broader slate of product launches. Those included information agents, generative UI features inside Search, and what Google calls Antigravity-powered custom experiences.
Sundar Pichai, speaking at I/O 2026, said AI Mode had already surpassed 1 billion monthly active users within a year of its launch. “People love it, and in just a year, it’s already surpassed 1 billion monthly active users,” Pichai said. He did not provide a more precise current user figure.
Google also reported that AI Mode queries have more than doubled every quarter since the feature launched, and that the average AI Mode search is three times the length of a traditional Search query. Those figures were published in a separate Google blog post examining how AI Mode is changing search behavior in the United States.
Separately, Google said AI Overviews — another AI-driven feature embedded in Search — has grown to more than 2.5 billion monthly active users, underscoring the scale at which the company is deploying AI features inside its flagship product.
