Gunman Killed After Shooting Spree and Hostage Siege at Kyiv Supermarket

At least five people were killed on Saturday after a gunman opened fire on a street in Kyiv and subsequently took hostages inside a supermarket. The incident began in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, where an unidentified gunman began shooting at pedestrians. The attacker then moved into a Velmart supermarket in the Demiivka neighborhood, where he barricaded himself inside and took several people hostage.

During the ensuing standoff, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that shots were heard coming from inside the supermarket. Local residents described the suspect as a man approximately 60 years old, though official identification has not yet been released.

Ukrainian law enforcement, including the Special Rapid Response Corps, responded by cordoning off the area and blocking Holosiivskyi Avenue to secure the perimeter. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko later confirmed on social media that the suspect was killed during the arrest operation.
