Most of the abducted passengers were candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), a standardized test organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The students were traveling from Makurdi to the Otukpo Local Government Area for their scheduled exams.

Benue State Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Emenari confirmed the kidnapping and stated that he has personally mobilized tactical teams and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to lead the search. Emenari reported that he is currently on the ground in Otukpo, directing the operation in the forest area.

Police are also investigating the circumstances of the trip. Commissioner Emenari noted that Benue Links maintains a policy against night services and had officially closed for the day. However, the driver reportedly picked up passengers along the road, a deviation from company policy that is currently under investigation.

Governor Hyacinth Alia issued a statement confirming the abduction and condemned the violence. He described the targeting of students as 'unacceptable' and stated that such actions stand against every norm of humanity and civil order. As of the latest reports, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
