KUCCPS Portal Closes Tonight, Locking in University and College Choices for 2025 KCSE Cohort

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) online application portal closed at midnight on May 6, 2026, ending a month-long application window that opened on April 8.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) online application portal closed at midnight on May 6, 2026, ending a month-long application window that opened on April 8. The deadline seals the choices of thousands of current and prior-year KCSE holders seeking placement in universities and colleges, shifting the agency's focus from intake to processing and allocation.

The Details

Students who sat the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and earned a minimum grade of C+ qualify for placement into degree programmes, while candidates with grades ranging from A to E are eligible for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, according to People Daily. The window was not restricted to the most recent cohort. KCSE holders dating back to the 2000 examination year could apply for TVET courses, and those with C+ or higher from 2000 through 2024 could seek placement into degree programmes at the Open University of Kenya.

Programmes available through the portal included degree courses, Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) diploma and certificate programmes, TVET diploma and certificate courses, Kenya Utalii College programmes, and teacher training college (TTC) diploma in secondary education, The Star reported. Throughout the application period, KUCCPS urged candidates to apply early, stating: "KUCCPS is leaving no one behind! What are you waiting for? Log in to http://students.kuccps.ac.ke and apply now!" In a final reminder posted on X on May 4, the agency warned: "2 Days to Go! KUCCPS application deadline is approaching! Apply now for Degree, KMTC, TVET, Kenya Utalii College and TTC Diploma in Secondary Education programmes. The deadline is May 6, 2026. Don't be caught up!" The agency also advised applicants to retain their payment reference numbers, which are required for any subsequent revisions or reapplications within the placement process.

Because the 2025 cluster points for each programme are calculated only after the application cycle closes, candidates were encouraged to use the 2024 cut-off points as a benchmark. The cut-off point for each programme is determined by the lowest cluster weight among successfully placed applicants from the prior cycle.

Context

The placement exercise comes against a backdrop of significant expansion in Kenya's higher education capacity. The 2026 Economic Survey shows the number of universities in the country rose from 72 to 74, TVET institutions increased by 370 newly accredited centres to 3,126, and teacher training colleges grew to 98, as reported by The Star. Despite a decline in formal TVET placements, total enrolment in TVET institutions rose by 17.3 percent to 825,484 in 2025, driven in large part by a 79.7 percent surge in private technical college enrolment to 196,790.

Placement data for the 2025-26 academic year indicates continued growth in government-sponsored university admissions. Overall placements increased from 157,762 in 2024-25 to 182,391. Public university placements rose by 18.2 percent to 164,518, while private university placements fell by 3.7 percent to 17,873.

What's Next

With the portal now closed, KUCCPS is expected to begin calculating the 2025 cluster points and processing applications. Applicants who submitted before the deadline will await their placement results in the coming weeks.
