London Synagogue Targeted in Latest Wave of Arson Attacks

BBC News

An attempted arson attack targeted the Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow, north-west London, overnight between Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, 2026.

An attempted arson attack targeted the Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow, north-west London, overnight between Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, 2026. The incident caused minor smoke damage to an internal room, though no injuries or significant structural damage were reported. Police have established a large cordon around the site, which is located near a local school and children's playground.

The Details

Metropolitan Police and forensic investigators spent Sunday morning processing the scene, utilizing fire investigation dogs and plainclothes officers. Witnesses reported seeing police search a black SUV in the vicinity of the synagogue. The response included several unmarked police vehicles and one marked unit stationed outside the building.

The Community Security Trust (CST) has linked this attempt to a broader pattern of violence targeting Jewish communities across London. Recent incidents have occurred in Finchley, Golders Green, and Hendon. A spokesperson for the CST described the current climate as an 'unprecedented period' and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately.

Counter-terrorism officers are currently leading the investigation due to the similarities between these events. Their probe includes the attempted arson at a synagogue in Finchley, an attack on a Persian language media organization, and a late March incident in Golders Green where four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were set on fire. In the Golders Green case, the fire caused several gas canisters to explode.

In response to the escalating threats, the Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in the affected areas, deploying armed officers to provide additional security. A spokesperson for the Campaign Against Antisemitism described the situation as a 'spate of daily arson attacks' targeting the Jewish community.

Legal actions are already underway following previous attacks. On April 15, a 46-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman were arrested in the Watford area on suspicion of arson endangering life in connection with the Finchley Reform Synagogue attack. Additionally, three men—Hamza Iqbal (20), Rehan Khan (19), and a 17-year-old—have been charged for their alleged roles in the Golders Green ambulance attacks.

Context

The surge in attacks comes amid a volatile security landscape for London's Jewish community. The Finchley Reform Synagogue incident on April 15 involved two individuals in balaclavas who attempted to use petrol-filled glass bottles and bricks, though the bottles failed to ignite. More recently, on April 18, a man attempted to light bottles of fluid next to a shop in Hendon, an area with a high Jewish population, but that attempt also failed to fully ignite.

Intelligence suggests a possible international dimension to some of these threats. The SITE Intelligence Group reported that a little-known group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI), which has links to Iran, claimed responsibility for the earlier attacks in Finchley and Golders Green. HAYI has reportedly claimed similar attacks in Belgium and the Netherlands in the past.

Despite these claims and the involvement of counter-terrorism units, UK authorities have stated they are keeping an open mind regarding the specific motives. They have not yet formally linked the most recent attempts in Kenton and Hendon to the earlier attacks, though the tactical similarities remain the primary driver for the specialized police response.

What's Next

The Metropolitan Police continue to monitor the situation closely, with armed patrols expected to remain a fixture in north-west London for the foreseeable future. Investigators are currently analyzing forensic evidence from the Kenton site and reviewing CCTV footage to determine if the black SUV seen Sunday morning is linked to the suspects.

Legal proceedings for the suspects arrested in Watford and those charged in the Golders Green case will likely provide more insight into the coordination and motivation behind the spree. The community remains on high alert as the CST continues to coordinate with law enforcement to harden security at Jewish sites across the city.
