French health authorities have cleared asymptomatic passengers to leave the Ambition cruise ship in Bordeaux after testing confirmed a norovirus outbreak that sickened 49 people among the more than 1,700 guests and crew on board.
The Details
The Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, was carrying 1,187 guests and 514 crew members when an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness emerged during the voyage. Passengers on board had been restricted from disembarking while authorities investigated the cause of the illness.
Following testing, French health officials identified the pathogen as norovirus and announced that no serious cases had been reported. Asymptomatic passengers were then permitted to leave the vessel.
Ambassador Cruise Line issued a statement confirming the ship's release. "Ambition has now been released by the relevant French health authorities to continue normal operations," the company said. The cruise line added that the vessel would proceed with scheduled shore excursions while maintaining enhanced sanitation and medical monitoring for those affected.
Passenger Carol Landa-Vance described the relief among travellers upon receiving the update. "We've had the good news tonight that the French government have tested and it's a norovirus, that's definite, and we're free to move about the ship tomorrow, and we're free to get off the ship tomorrow," she said.
Context
Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach bug that typically causes vomiting and diarrhoea. Most patients recover within about two days, though the virus can spread rapidly in close-contact environments such as cruise ships, schools, and care facilities.
The Ambition departed Belfast on 8 May and made a scheduled stop in Liverpool on 9 May before arriving in Bordeaux. The ship was mid-voyage when the outbreak prompted the temporary restrictions on passenger movement.
What's Next
French health authorities have stated that isolation and reinforced hygiene protocols will remain in place for affected passengers. The ship has resumed its itinerary, though sanitation procedures are being maintained across the vessel as a precautionary measure.
