Pink Floyd's newly issued four-LP live album from 1975 finished as the top-selling release at independent record stores on Record Store Day 2026, held April 18, while Bruno Mars — this year's Ambassador — landed the No.

Pink Floyd's newly issued four-LP live album from 1975 finished as the top-selling release at independent record stores on Record Store Day 2026, held April 18, while Bruno Mars — this year's Ambassador — landed the No. 2 album and Taylor Swift claimed the top single, according to Luminate sales data for the week ending April 23.

The Details

The Pink Floyd release, titled 'Live From the Los Angeles Sports Arena, April 26th, 1975,' was pressed on clear vinyl across four LPs and ranked first among all independent record store album sellers during RSD week, per Billboard. A companion 2-CD edition of the same concert landed at No. 24 on the same chart.

Bruno Mars, who served as the official 2026 Record Store Day Ambassador, placed at No. 2 with 'Collaborations,' an 11-track double-vinyl compilation. Taylor Swift's 7-inch single 'Elizabeth Taylor,' released on 'Cry My Eyes Violet Glitter Vinyl' and pairing the original with a 'So Glamorous Cabaret Version,' was the No. 1 best-selling single of the day, according to Luminate and reported by Billboard.

The K-Pop animated film soundtrack 'KPop Demon Hunters' showed the strength of cross-format demand, placing two distinct vinyl editions in the top 10 albums: the HUNTR/X edition at No. 3 and the Saja Boys edition at No. 6, according to Billboard.

More than 350 album and single products were issued exclusively for RSD 2026 and sold only through independent record stores, Billboard reported.

National sales data from Luminate showed U.S. physical album sales during RSD week totaled 2.276 million units, up from 2.241 million during RSD week 2025, according to Billboard. Vinyl accounted for 1.409 million of those units, a decline from 1.482 million the prior year, while CD sales rose to 627,000 units from 519,000 in 2025.

At the independent store level, the picture was more nuanced. Total indie physical sales fell 9.3% year-over-year, from nearly 1.27 million copies in 2025 to approximately 1.15 million in 2026, per AceShowbiz citing Luminate data. Indie vinyl sales dropped 11.6%, from roughly 1.108 million to 979,000 units, while indie CD sales rose 6.7%, from about 155,000 to 166,000.

Despite the unit decline at the indie level, many individual stores reported record revenue days. Stephen Godfrey, co-owner and president of Rough Trade in Manhattan, said the store posted 'our biggest year ever by some distance, and for the first time we beat out our flagship store in London.' Other stores citing their best-ever single-day results included Down In The Valley in Minneapolis, Monster Music & Movies in Charleston, Licorice Pizza in Studio City, and Music Millennium in Portland, per Billboard's Retail Track as reported by K-Jewel 99.3 FM.

Context

Bruno Mars follows a line of recent Record Store Day Ambassadors that includes Post Malone in 2025, Paramore in 2024, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires in 2023, Taylor Swift in 2022, Fred Armisen in 2021, Brandi Carlile in 2020, and Pearl Jam in 2019, according to Billboard.

Mars described his enthusiasm for the role in a statement issued when the appointment was announced. 'Independent record stores are so important because you get the chance to immerse and surround yourself with music and that's why I'm so excited to be this year's Record Store Day Ambassador,' he said. 'I love collecting vinyl because nothing is better than sitting on your couch, putting on a record and just listening to music like that. It feels like a lost art.'

The 2026 event returned to the traditional third Saturday of April, according to K-Jewel 99.3 FM citing Billboard Retail Track. RSD 2025 had taken place on the second Saturday of April due to a banking holiday.

The combination of record store revenue highs and softening unit totals at the industry level reflected a split result: flagship and boutique locations in major markets saw outsized demand, while unit figures across a broader base of independent stores declined year-over-year, according to Luminate data and retail reports cited by AceShowbiz and K-Jewel 99.3 FM.

What's Next

Karl Groeger, owner of Looney Tunes Records in West Babylon, described RSD 2026 as the busiest day in the store's 55-year history in a statement cited by K-Jewel 99.3 FM, saying sales came in at 'astronomical numbers' — 32.4% above their prior best day. Newbury Comics, the New England chain, called it the second-biggest single-day vinyl sales day in company history, trailing only RSD 2024, with Pink Floyd and Taylor Swift singles as its top sellers, according to K-Jewel 99.3 FM.

No official date for Record Store Day 2027 has been announced. The annual event, which typically falls on the third Saturday of April, continues to be organized by the Record Store Day organization in partnership with participating independent record stores.
