Iowa City police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning near the University of Iowa campus. The incident, which took place around College and Clinton streets in downtown Iowa City, resulted in confirmed victims. University officials issued multiple emergency alerts warning the community to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
The Details
The University of Iowa's Hawk Alert system first reported gunshots at 1:51 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026. The shooting occurred at the intersection of College and Clinton streets, a location approximately one block from the perimeter of the university campus.
In an update issued at 2:03 a.m., university officials confirmed that first responders had arrived on the scene and that there were confirmed victims. While the exact number of injured persons and the severity of their wounds have not been publicly disclosed, police have maintained a perimeter around the intersection.
By 2:31 a.m., a follow-up alert urged the public to continue avoiding the area and to remain vigilant of their surroundings. Law enforcement agencies, including the Iowa City Police Department, are currently processing the scene and searching for potential suspects.
Separately, reports from The Gazette indicate another shooting occurred earlier that same night, around 11:45 p.m. Saturday. That incident took place near the Clock Tower Parking Ramp at Iowa and Gilbert streets, approximately four blocks northwest of the College and Clinton street location.
In the Saturday night incident, one man was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital. That shooting was reportedly preceded by a fight involving several individuals, and the suspect in that case fled the scene on foot.
Authorities have not yet confirmed if the two shootings are related or if they are separate, isolated incidents occurring within the same downtown corridor over the span of two hours.
Context
The University of Iowa Hawk Alert system serves as the primary emergency notification tool for students, faculty, and the surrounding community. The downtown Iowa City area, particularly the intersections near the campus perimeter, is a high-traffic zone for the university population.
This region has seen previous security concerns. In November 2025, a shots-fired incident occurred near E. Burlington Street. At that time, Iowa City Police declared the event an isolated incident and determined there was no ongoing threat to the public.
The dual nature of Sunday's events—two separate reports of gunfire in a small geographic area within a short timeframe—has led to increased police presence and heightened caution among residents and students in the downtown district.
What's Next
Investigations into both the College/Clinton and Iowa/Gilbert shootings are ongoing. Police are expected to review surveillance footage from downtown businesses and university security cameras to identify suspects and determine the sequence of events.
Further updates from the University of Iowa and local law enforcement are anticipated regarding the condition of the victims and whether any arrests have been made. Officials have not yet indicated if these attacks were targeted or random.
Community members are encouraged to report any information regarding the incidents through official police channels while continuing to follow the guidance issued via the Hawk Alert system.
