Shabnim Ismail Reverses Retirement as South Africa Names 15-Player Women's T20 World Cup Squad

Cricket South Africa has finalised a 15-player squad for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, headlined by the recall of fast bowler Shabnim Ismail from international retirement. The decision to bring South Africa's record T20I wicket-taker back into the national set-up adds significant experience to a group that will contest the tournament across England and Wales from 12 June to 5 July.

Ismail's decision to reverse her retirement marks the most significant development in a squad announcement that otherwise leans heavily on continuity. The veteran pacemaker has not represented South Africa since the 2023 T20 World Cup final, but her reintegration brings considerable experience to the bowling attack. Ismail carries 113 T20 International caps into the squad and holds the South African record with 123 wickets in the format.

The squad named by Cricket South Africa also includes the return of several other experienced campaigners. Marizanne Kapp, Dane van Niekerk and Karabo Meso have all been recalled to the national set-up alongside the retained core group. Laura Wolvaardt will captain the 15-player unit during the tournament.

Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi was clear about the reasoning behind Ismail's return. The coaching staff engaged in direct discussions with the fast bowler before finalising the squad, and Mashimbyi said those conversations left no doubt about her motivation to compete again at the international level.

"Having someone like Shabnim back adds a lot of value to the group," Mashimbyi said. "We had good conversations and you could see the hunger she still has to represent South Africa and help this team achieve something special."

The coach tied the selection directly to the team's assessment of its needs after competing at the previous year's ODI World Cup. Mashimbyi said the management had identified a requirement for additional match-winning impact in the squad ahead of another global tournament. Zee News separately corroborated the squad list, Ismail's return from retirement, and Mashimbyi's explanation that South Africa wanted her X-factor back in the set-up.

"Looking at the ODI World Cup last year, we felt we needed that X-factor," Mashimbyi said. "And she definitely carries that."

Clinton du Preez, convenor of selectors for the Proteas Women, said the panel had prioritised keeping a stable group together throughout the selection process. The selectors believe the understanding developed among the players over time is a strategic asset as they head into World Cup competition.

"Keeping the core of the group together was important to us because this is a squad that has built strong experience, combinations and understanding over time," du Preez said.

South Africa have been drawn in Group 1 and will open their tournament schedule against Australia on 13 June at Manchester. The squad is set to complete warm-up preparations in Arundel before that first competitive fixture. The full tournament will be staged across England and Wales through to 5 July.

South Africa's campaign comes with the weight of recent near-misses in ICC women's tournaments. The national side has finished as runners-up in recent major finals and continues to chase its first Women's T20 World Cup title.

The squad announcement follows a successful limited-overs period for the Proteas. South Africa claimed a 4-1 victory in a recent T20I series against India, and Mashimbyi identified that result as an important confidence boost for the group ahead of the World Cup.
