A gunman killed six people and injured at least 14 others in a chaotic shooting spree in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv on Saturday.
A gunman killed six people and injured at least 14 others in a chaotic shooting spree in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv on Saturday. The attacker opened fire on civilians in the street before taking hostages inside a local supermarket, where he was eventually neutralized by Ukrainian special forces. The incident has sparked urgent questions regarding weapon licensing and mental health certifications in the capital.
The Details
The violence began on Saturday, April 18, when a gunman opened fire on pedestrians in Kyiv's southern Holosiivskyi district, killing four people on the street. The shooter then entered a nearby supermarket, where he barricaded himself inside and took several hostages. During the standoff, a fifth person was killed within the store. A sixth victim, a young woman, died later in the hospital from injuries sustained during the attacks.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko described the shooter's actions as 'very chaotic,' stating that the gunman fired single shots at point-blank range. 'People had almost no chance,' Klymenko said during a post-incident briefing.
Ukrainian special forces established a perimeter around the supermarket and attempted to negotiate with the gunman. According to Klymenko, police offered to provide medical assistance, including tourniquets for a wounded person inside, but the gunman refused to respond. Following the failed negotiations, special forces stormed the building, during which the gunman opened fire on officers and was subsequently shot dead.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that four hostages were successfully rescued during the operation. In total, 14 people were injured, including a child, with 10 requiring hospitalization for their trauma.
Context
The gunman has been identified as a 58-year-old man born in Moscow who had previously lived in the Donetsk region before settling in Kyiv. A neighbor of ten years described him as a solitary individual who was well-mannered and showed no previous signs of aggression toward other residents.
Investigation into the weapon revealed that the gunman used a carbine that was legally registered for civilian purchase. Minister Klymenko noted that the man had applied to renew his weapon permit in December 2025, providing a medical certificate as part of the application. The Ukrainian government is now investigating the authorities who issued the permit and the validity of the medical certification.
While the attack occurred amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, officials have indicated there is currently no evidence that the shooting was connected to military activity or foreign intelligence operations.
What's Next
Ukrainian authorities are now focused on determining the motive behind the spree, which remains unclear. Investigators are reviewing the shooter's digital footprint and personal history to understand the catalyst for the attack.
There is expected to be a rigorous review of the weapons licensing process, specifically regarding how medical certificates are vetted before permits are renewed. The incident highlights the tension between Ukraine's relatively permissive gun laws and the need for stringent psychiatric screening for owners of lethal firearms.
