Skydiver Rescued After Crashing Into Video Board During Virginia Tech Spring Game

AP News / USA Today

A skydiver carrying an American flag was rescued by first responders after crashing into the video board at Lane Stadium during pregame ceremonies on Saturday.

A skydiver carrying an American flag was rescued by first responders after crashing into the video board at Lane Stadium during pregame ceremonies on Saturday. The incident occurred during Virginia Tech's annual spring football game in Blacksburg, Virginia, leading to a significant delay in the event. Officials report that the individual was safely secured and is currently stable.

The Details

The accident happened when the skydiver, who was part of a pregame jump team, was blown off course by wind gusts. According to reports, two skydivers were gliding over the stadium with American flags; the individual carrying the larger flag was caught by the wind and collided with the scoreboard. The parachute landed atop the scoreboard, specifically between the 'C' and the 'H' of the 'Virginia Tech' lettering, leaving the skydiver dangling in front of the video board.

To execute the rescue, first responders utilized a crane to reach the individual. During the collision, the parachute caused visible damage to the scoreboard covering, exposing the lighting underneath the lettering. While suspended, the skydiver reportedly dropped the American flag and a smaller parachute into the spectator stands.

Virginia Tech Athletics released a statement via X confirming the successful rescue: 'We are grateful to report that the skydiver was safely secured and is currently stable. Our primary focus remains on their well-being. We extend our sincere appreciation to the first responders, event staff, and medical personnel for their swift, coordinated and professional response.'

Conflicting reports emerged regarding the timing of the rescue. Local outlet WSLS cited university spokesperson Mark Owczarski stating the rescue occurred within 15 minutes. However, other outlets, including ESPN and On3, indicated that the rescue process took longer, with some reports estimating the delay at roughly 45 minutes to over an hour. The identity of the skydiver has not been released.

Wind conditions in Blacksburg were recorded at approximately 15 MPH on Saturday afternoon, which likely contributed to the parachuter being pushed off their intended flight path.

Context

Lane Stadium serves as the home field for the Virginia Tech Hokies. The incident coincided with a significant transition period for the university's football program. This was the first spring game under new head coach James Franklin.

Franklin returned to the Hokies after being dismissed by Penn State midway through the 2025 season. He had previous ties to the program, having served as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech earlier in his career. His hiring followed the departure of Brent Pry, who was replaced after an 0-3 start to the 2025 season. In a notable coaching move, Franklin subsequently brought Pry back onto his staff after taking over as head coach.

What's Next

Virginia Tech Athletics has not yet provided an update on the repair timeline for the damaged scoreboard covering. The university is expected to review the safety protocols for pregame aerial displays following the incident.

The spring game serves as a critical evaluation period for James Franklin as he continues to integrate his staff and vision for the team ahead of the 2026 regular season. Following the delay caused by the rescue, the game proceeded with a focus on the team's progress under the new leadership.
