Mockingbird Pictures, a Vietnamese distributor, has acquired international rights to "Zero Meets Hero," the latest film from director Huynh Lap, and will showcase it to overseas buyers at the Beijing International Film Festival beginning April 10. The film is set for a September 2 theatrical release in Vietnam and marks the distributor's continued effort to place Vietnamese commercial cinema in North American and Asian markets.
"Zero Meets Hero" centers on two men from different generations—Mr. Thoi, a war veteran, and his Gen Z grandson Tri Binh—who embark on a shared journey after Mr. Thoi pursues tracking down former military comrades. The narrative weaves Vietnamese spiritual beliefs throughout and transitions from comedy into emotional drama. The cast includes Meritorious Artist Cao Minh, Cody Nam Vo, and director Huynh Lap, alongside Hong Anh, Hua Vy Van, Tin Nguyen, Quang Trung, Puka, and Xuan Phuc.
Phong Duong, business director of Mockingbird Pictures, stated: "We believe that high-quality, culturally authentic stories like 'Zero Meets Hero' can transcend borders and connect with audiences worldwide when positioned strategically." Producer Hong Tu added that the film reflects "a sense of patriotism and the younger generation's gratitude toward those who came before them," emphasizing universal themes intended to resonate globally.
The acquisition represents another expansion milestone for Mockingbird Pictures, which has been building a portfolio of Vietnamese box office performers across Asia and North America. Huynh Lap's previous feature, "The Ancestral Home," earned VND242 billion ($9 million) domestically, placing it among the highest-grossing Vietnamese films on record.
Context
Vietnamese cinema has seen increased international distribution efforts in recent years as local films demonstrate sustained commercial performance. "The Ancestral Home" grossed $9 million in Vietnam alone, a figure that positions locally produced films as viable international acquisitions for distributors seeking culturally specific content with broader appeal. The Beijing International Film Festival has become a key marketplace for Asian filmmakers seeking overseas distribution deals, with numerous Vietnamese productions presented there in recent years.
What's Next
The film's September 2 release date aligns with Vietnam National Day celebrations, a strategic timing that typically drives domestic box office performance. International sales activity at Beijing will determine which territories Mockingbird secures for theatrical and streaming distribution, with North American placement likely a priority given the distributor's stated focus on that market. The success of this release will influence whether Mockingbird pursues additional Vietnamese commercial titles for global distribution in 2026 and beyond.
